Komen Columbus Announces Funding for 2008-2009 Breast Health Programming in 23-County Service Area
Local programs to receive nearly $1.4 million for breast cancer education, screening, and treatment

Komen Columbus announced it will grant a record $1,394,997 to fund 34 programs from within its 23-county service area in 2008-09.   Komen Columbus has raised nearly $11 million since it began in 1993 – 75 percent of that money stays in its 23-county service area and is used to conduct breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs. The other 25 percent goes to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure to fund national breast cancer research programs.

Grant monies will provide breast health programming for more than 85,000 women, ages 15 and older in 21 counties of its 23-county service area. These counties include: Athens, Delaware, Fairfield, Fayette, Franklin, Gallia, Hocking Jackson, Lawrence, Licking, Madison, Marion, Meigs, Morgan, Muskingum, Perry, Pickaway, Pike, Ross, Scioto, Union, Vinton and Washington.

Komen Columbus grant recipients for 2008-09 include:

Aquatic Exercise for Lymphedema (Mount Carmel East Hospital Women's Health Center) – This grant seeks to offer breast cancer survivors options for finding help with diagnosing, treating and developing prevention strategies for lymphedema through the use of an aquatic aerobic exercise program.


Asian Women Think Pink (Asian American Community Services) – This project provides culturally sensitive outreach and breast health education for Asian American women.


• Breast Cancer Exercise Program (Mount Carmel Women’s Health Center) – This program assists women with breast cancer to incorporate exercise into their lifestyle so that they may experience the many benefits fitness has to offer. This project will target women with breast cancer at least four weeks after breast cancer surgery.


Breast Education, Screening and Treatment (BEST) (American Cancer Society) - The BEST Program for Women was developed and implemented in 1992 to provide screening mammograms and early breast cancer detection opportunities for low income, uninsured women.


Breast Health Awareness, Education and Screening for uninsured Women of Madison County (Madison County Health Partners Inc.) – The Madison County Health Partners Free Clinic will provide mammograms and breast health education to uninsured women in Madison County.


BHESAW Breast Health Education and Screening for Asian Women (Asian Festival Corporation) – This project targets 250 Asian women, using community health advocates serving as community liaisons and interpreters during breast health education and mammograms.


• Breast Health Project (Selby General Hospital) – Selby General Hospital Breast Health Project is to increase screening mammograms to uninsured women ages 40 and older in Appalachian Washington County.


BRIDGES on the PATH to Wellness (OhioHealth Foundation) - The program will partner with community agencies to provide a continuum and expansion of post treatment services for low income breast cancer survivors and women from minority communities throughout central Ohio. Additionally, it will reduce and remove obstacles to breast cancer care by providing women in need with vouchers for medications, transportation, gas cards and lodging during treatment and other supplies needed during and after treatment.


Central Ohio Breast Cancer Survivorship Initiative (OSU James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute) – This program will promote key principles of breast cancer survivorship through education, screening, treatment and support. The focus will be on the transition from active breast cancer treatment to follow-up with attention on long-term survivorship initiatives to maximize outcomes.

• El Programa de la salud para la vida: A breast health education program for Latina women (Ohio Health Research Institute) – This program will address the breast health needs of the Latino community by aiming to increase screenings by connecting Latina women to already existing screening services through community educational programs and the use of a hotline.


Gentle Yoga for Energy and Relaxation (Mount Carmel Hospital St. Ann’s) - This program will provide a yoga program for survivors with the goal of reducing treatment side effects and improving overall health.


• Hands of Hope (Southern Ohio Medical Center) – This program will educate women ages 40 and older living in Scioto, Pike and Lawrence counties about the importance of breast cancer early detection. The program will also provide screening mammograms to uninsured women 40 to 49 and will hire a nurse navigator to provide home visits to post mastectomy patients.


Healthy Adult Breast Screening Project (Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine) - This program will provide services on a fully-equipped mobile unit that travels throughout southeastern Ohio. The focus will be on women 40 and older, but the program is not limited to this age group.


IMPEDE (Importance of Prevention and Early Detection) (Grady Memorial Hospital) - The overall goal of the IMPEDE program is to educate women in Delaware County on the importance of prevention and early detection of breast cancer and support and assist women diagnosed with the disease.


Medicare & Mammography (M&M) Project (Ohio Breast and Cervical Cancer Coalition) – The project seeks to increase awareness about breast cancer and mammography among women with Medicare in Fayette and Lawrence counties.


• No Excuses Pink Fridays (Madison County Hospital) - This program will provide a formal community breast cancer education and awareness program for the women of Madison County, provide financial support for screening mammograms and provide a personal guide (navigator) to facilitate treatment of those individuals diagnosed with breast cancer.


• Ohio Health’s Breast Health Second Opinion Clinic (Ohio Health Foundation) - This free weekly clinic provides women a second opinion on diagnosis and treatment by using a group of multi-specialty physicians and professions that meet with the patient to review her case.


• Operation Red Zone: Strengthening the Safety Net (Holzer Medical Center) – The program will provide community-wide breast health education and risk assessment screenings for women ages 50 and younger living in Gallia, Jackson and Vinton counties.


• Pink Ladies Days (King’s Daughters Medical Center Community Services) - This program will provide screening mammography and education to women of Scioto and Lawrence counties with annual reminders.


• POSE – Partnership, Outreach, Support, Education (African American Cancer Support Group, Inc) - This program will use educational materials, presentations, Web access and a hotline to raise awareness and expand breast health outreach within the African American community.


• Power of Pink (Memorial Hospital of Union County) -- This program will provide direct-care services including screening, diagnostic and breast ultrasounds for those residents of the Memorial Hospital of Union County service area who are uninsured or underinsured. Also provides educational awareness and employee incentive programs.


• Relaxation and Guided Imagery for Symptom Management by Breast Cancer Survivors (Capital University) - This project will teach breast cancer survivors to effectively use relaxation and guided imagery in managing chronic symptoms and stress.


• S.A.S.S. (Service and Social Support) (Public Health Partnership of Licking County and Licking County Health Department) - The Public Health Partnership of Licking County along with the Licking County Health Department will partner in a program to educate and create awareness on the affects of breast cancer to those Licking County residents who have been affected in any way by breast cancer.


• S.O.S The Spirit of Strength Project: Treatment of Depressive Symptoms in Breast Cancer Patients and Survivors (The Ohio State University Research Foundation) – This project, the only one of its kind in central Ohio, will develop a specialty clinic for breast cancer patients and survivors in need of services to address depression.


• S.O.S. Saving Our Sistas (City of Refuge Point of Impact) - This project will partner with Mount Carmel Health to provide prevention and education services and mammograms to African American women. The project will work to distribute information through African American churches.


• Strength In Motion (Adena Health System) - This project is a 12-week strength and fitness program for breast cancer survivors for women in Ross county, Chillicothe and surrounding communities.


• Support Through James Stitching Sisters (The James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute) - The Stitching Sisters’ main endeavor is to provide a lap quilt for each newly diagnosed breast cancer patient receiving chemotherapy.


• Supporting Survivorship through Retreat and Renewal (The James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institution) - This project will sponsor quarterly one-day educational conferences to discuss the long-term physical, psychological, social and economic issues associated with breast cancer survivorship.


Think Pink (Meigs County Cancer Initiative) - The Think Pink Project for women ages 40 and older residing in Meigs County will enable the Meigs County Cancer Initiative to implement a community tailored approach to raise awareness and provide education about breast health as well as increase mammography screening rates among women in Meigs County.


• TOGETHER WE CAN (Ross County Health District) - This program will provide screening and education services to a rural, Appalachian population of women ages 40-64 who are at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level and who are uninsured and residing in Gallia, Jackson, Lawrence, Pike, Ross, Scioto or Vinton counties.


• Tri-County Health Breast Cancer Initiative (Genesis HealthCare System) - This program will provide breast health education and breast screening services to women in Morgan, Muskingum and Perry Counties, targeting women who do not have the funds to obtain annual breast mammography due to their uninsured or under-insured status.


• Vinton County Breast Education and Awareness Project (BEAP) (Vinton County Health Department) – The goal of this program is to educate the women of Vinton County regarding health issues and raise breast cancer awareness.


• Yes, Mamm! (The Columbus Cancer Clinic, A Member of the LifeCare Alliance Family) - This program will provide 1,600 mammograms to women ages 40 and older or women with a family history of breast cancer with an emphasis on women who live in areas south of I-70 in Franklin County, are minority, and/or uninsured or under-insured.


• You Are Not Alone- Targeted Support for Young Women with Breast Cancer (YSC Central Ohio) - The project will provide specific resource information, education peer support services, and awareness programs for young women (ages 40 and younger) affected by breast cancer.
