Komen Columbus Grants $1.5 Million to 26 Community Programs

COLUMBUS – Susan G. Komen Columbus announced today it will grant $1.5 million to fund 26 programs that will make a profound life-saving impact to thousands of women and men with breast health screening, education, and treatment throughout the year.

The portfolio of programming will educate and link women to screenings through community outreach, and remove barriers that prevent women from being screened. To address financial, physical and logistical barriers women face throughout central and southeastern Ohio, programs will provide mammograms, surgical consultations, medications, breast prostheses and wigs. Mobile mammography will increase access to screenings and patient navigators will ensure appropriate follow-up and survivorship support is in place.

“This is a collaborative effort on our part and our community partnerships to not only address the lack of services in our area but to also assess the impact we are making,” said Julie McMahon, Director of Missions at Komen Columbus, “While Komen continues to be a leading research funder around the globe, not everyone is experiencing high quality health care equally, especially in our service area. Ohio has higher breast cancer death rates than most of the U.S., and women are being diagnosed at late-stages in Ohio. In our community, we have identified issues contributing to those problems and increased our focus on using techniques that have been demonstrated to be effective. ”

From April 2015 to March 2016, Komen Columbus community partners will provide more than 141,000 quality breast health care services to underserved, underinsured women throughout central and southeastern Ohio.

The following programs have been selected for Susan G. Komen Columbus funding by an independent grant panel through a competitive application and review process. For more information or directions to any of our Community Grant Recipients, click here.
