Komen Columbus Launches “Dear Cancer” Campaign
In 2015, it is estimated that over 200,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in the United States, and over 1.7 million new cases have been diagnosed since 2012. But we all know that breast cancer is far from a faceless disease. The courageous fighters of this disease are vital members of our community. They are our mothers, our daughters, our best friends, and our coworkers.
This October, Susan G. Komen Columbus® wanted to do something a little different to raise awareness. We wanted to give members of our community the opportunity to speak directly to the disease that has significantly affected their own lives and the lives of those they are closest to. And thus, the “Dear Cancer” Campaign was born.
The “Dear Cancer” Campaign focuses on giving those members of our community that voice. We asked survivors, family members, friends, and professionals to write an open and honest letter to cancer. We have been overwhelmed with the response to this campaign. The letters we have received have been poignant and have evoked in us a variety of emotions. They demonstrate the passion, tears, humor, and inspiration of those who wrote them, and we feel privileged to be able to share them with you.
What we are most humbled to be able to share with you in these letters is the hope that each writer has taken away from their experience with cancer. At Susan G. Komen Columbus, we share this hope that very soon we can all live in a world without breast cancer and the hope that our mothers, daughters, and best friends will be safe from this terrible disease. Through the “Dear Cancer” Campaign, our goal is to pass that hope along to the rest of the community while continuing to raise awareness.
