Nicole Phillips will serve as the Athens Race for the Cure Honorary Chair
ATHENS, OHIO –Susan G. Komen Columbus is proud to announce that Nicole Phillips, the wife of Ohio University’s Head Men’s Basketball Coach Saul Phillips, will serve as the Honorary Race Chair for the inaugural Susan G. Komen Athens Race for the Cure on Sunday, October 25, 2015.
Nicole is currently recovering from a mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer in May. She acknowledges that being self-aware of her body and being her own advocate were keys in catching the cancer in its early stages.
“If it had gone undetected any longer, I would be fighting a totally different battle. I credit that doctor with saving my life. She credits me with saving my own life,” said Nicole, who has been very public about her breast cancer journey through her blog, www.nicolejphillips.com.
“I think women are scared of the unknown, and I think they are unsure of how to support a friend battling cancer. I’m hoping that by sharing my experience I can provide a little more insight into living with cancer and love through cancer,” said Nicole.
Nicole’s faith, her zest for life and the love and support of her family and friends have empowered her to use her voice to bring awareness about breast cancer and the resources available in the community.
“Many of the tests I have undergone and treatments I will undergo only exist because people I don’t even know had the heart to support the research funded by Susan G. Komen.”
Nicole is doing her part to give back. She started a Race team, called Team Phillips, and her daughter Jordan is one of her top fundraisers.
“I am committed to do what I can to keep the conversation going about breast self-awareness. I am incredibly grateful for Susan G. Komen’s vision that has changed the way we talk about and treat breast cancer, and it’s all happened in the last 30 years! As a 10 year old little girl, I never would have imagined that by the time I was 40, I would be so in love with a little pink ribbon and all the caring it represents.”
As honorary chair, Nicole will participate in various media activities, attend Race events and encourage fundraising and early detection.
